2023 FAVORITES

Guided by the hyperactive trend cycle of social media, fashion in 2023 was dominated by subcultures and rapid obsessions. With the spotlight being swung in every direction on TikTok and Instagram Reels, previously niche corners of fashion culture were brought to scrollers' attention for the first time. Due to this exposure, we were treated to an expressive year of fashion with intentional references which cut through a blanket of explore page sensibilities. In lieu of that, here are some of my favorite items from 2023 that undoubtedly fall into most of those categories.

PAF “4.0+ Center Hoodie”

Post Archive Faction had an extremely strong 2023. Self-taught South Korean designer Dongjoon Lim provides a fresh perspective on wardrobe staples with a twist through his luxury label.

I got my hands on the 4.0+ Center Hoodie through Ssense during their black Friday sale, & I am very pleased with the quality that PAF achieved on this garment. The garment features a buttery 100% polyester fleece blend, an oversized hood, and PAF's signature asymmetrical zip. This hoodie adds the right amount of interest to a simple black hoodie. I have fun deciding how to position the zippers every time I put this on.

VTG Saxon Leather Varsity Bomber Jacket

Saxon Leather is one of North America’s most established leather goods companies. Created by European immigrant Michal Hirsch, the Canadian label specializes in wool and leather goods that age gracefully.

This jacket is probably my best Grailed acquisition to date. Complete with a wool body, leather arms, and a satin lining. This varsity bomber hits perfectly at the waist for a classic cropped fit that transforms a silhouette. To top it off, I found this piece for an absolute steal.

APC “Fairfax Jeans”

A.P.C needs no introduction. Since the late 80’s, the French fashion label has produced wardrobe staples of the highest quality. Known for their raw denim, A.P.C is a juggernaut in today's culture.

This pair of mid-rise raw Japanese denim allows me to elevate any outfit. I sized up from my regular 32 to a 34 waist on these because I wanted them to stack. And I’m super happy with my decision. I got these while visiting the homie Xavier at the A.P.C store on Melrose. I highly recommend visiting the store if you’re in the area. I had a great in-store experience and left with the perfect pair of denim.

VTG Levi’s Silvertab Baggy Short

The internet has been obsessed with Silver Tab Levi’s for a while. The 90’s era wide-leg, baggy Levi’s have become so popular that Levi’s brought the tag back with a more contemporary twist. Although the modern rendition pales in comparison, the silver tab lives on as garnish for an outfit for those who know.

I love the amount of character these have. I purhcased these through Chad Sentzel in the LES. & they haven’t left my legs since.

Wales Bonner Adidas Samba “Black Pony Hair”

This is the most headass part of this editorial, but I could not exclude these from this list. Not only is the Samba the shoe of 2023, but Wales Bonner and Adidas also have an argument for collaboration of the year. Wales Bonner successfully furthers her colorful relationship with the timeless German trainer in the most tasteful variation yet- pony hair.

ACCESSORIES

Modern Emo “Serpent Chain” in Brass

Aptly named Modern Emo is a jeweler in Brooklyn, New York, that creates unique punk accessories. The founder and designer Leslie Crockett infuses her style into her accesories. All of which are unique stand-out pieces of jewelry.

Crafted using an actual vertebrae from a snake, the “Serpent Chain” the necklace features 28 cast bones and 1 genuine. I love to talk about the chain whenever people ask... even when they don’t sometimes. Mine is casted in brass, but I plan on having it plated silver. @m0dern_em0 on IG.

OR “Trailmix Beanie”

Outdoor Research is a privately held outdoor brand based in Seattle, Washington. Guided by the spirit of the outdoors, OR specializes in gear that can help you tackle any condition, from a rainy commute to the subzero temperatures on the tops of mountains.

This hat fits like a glove. I had my eye on it for a while and finally pulled the trigger during a sale at REI. Not much to say about this one. Just a great wardrobe staple for the colder months on the East Coast.

VTG Tommy Hilfiger Shades

Tommy Hilfiger, one of the kings of sportswear. The self-named brand founded by a young American designer in the 1980's draws its inspiration from the pop stars of the times who championed the red white & blue logo. While the golden day passed for Tommy, the brand continues to operate as an accessible option for the modern sporty prep.

While at a tag sale in Lake George, NY, I saw these accumulating dust in a pencil case of old busted frames. Previously shadeless, I got these for a dollar and didn’t remove them from my face for the rest of the day. This pair of sunglasses make me feel like Justin Timberlake, & I hope I never lose them.
