OSGEMEOS, THE TWINS TAKING OVER

In São Paulo, Brazil, a city where everything is “pretty much a mess and totally out of control,”, a pair of twins who go by the pseudonym OSGEMEOS found a spark that has taken them around the world. The creative duo found their distinct surreal style in the 80s through a bygone era of films about breakers and graffiti crews that reached their hometown of Sao Paulo a decade after the outsiders' expression permeated popular culture in the United States. Informed by their limited access to the world of hip-hop, the pair took to the streets to express what they had learned on the movie screen.

When you see a piece of art from OSGEMEOS, you can really feel the emotion created by their upbringing in Brazil. The two recount being in the streets every day, playing with their siblings in an environment where one had to “be creative to find ways to play". The twins found solace in abandoned factories, where they started to practice graffiti. Thirty years later, OSGEMEOS has displayed art across the world on city and gallery walls alike.

In the duo's work, surrealism meets popular culture at an intersection in a countryside town. Though seemingly very playful and dreamy, OSGEMEOS never shy away from the economic hardships in their country. The pair believe that “art has the power to transform.”. Their work opens “a positive portal to the people who live here in the streets.”, which leads to a place the duo calls “Tritrez”, a landscape inspired by their dreams that serves as an escape from reality.

In 2024, the duo will begin a year-long exhibition at the Hirshhorn Museum in Washington D.C, that will show from May 18, 2024, to July 6, 2025. Titled ‘OSGEMEOS: ENDLESS STORY’, the exhibit will include drawings, murals, paintings, sculptures, and video. Many of which have never been seen outside of Brazil or in some cases at all. The twins will display 1000 pieces across their multi-floor takeover of the museum. One can only guess how far into Tritrez they plan on taking us.
